From arrival to the boat,
the real friction is payment

The hard part isn't the train — it's the payment.

Korea has a dense network of high-speed rail (KTX·SRT), express/intercity buses, urban rail, air, and coastal ferries. The basic route: arrive at Incheon/Gimpo → regional gateway → board the boat at the local port. The core friction isn't the mode of transport but online booking and payment — foreign cards frequently fail on 3D-Secure and Korean identity verification.

Regional connections by airport code

Jeju = CJU direct/domestic flights; East Sea = Yangyang (YNY) or Incheon → KTX Gangneung; South Sea = Gimhae (PUS)·Yeosu (RSU)·Sacheon (HIN); West Sea = overland after Incheon; Ulleung = no airport yet (overland + ferry).

  • Incheon Airport ↔ Seoul: AREX Express (nonstop, all reserved seats), adult ₩13,000; the standard train is distance-based, around ₩4,000.
  • 8 gateways — ICN·GMP·CJU·PUS·YNY·RSU·HIN·KUV.
02Rail

300km/h, direct all the way to Gangneung and Busan

KTX departs from Seoul·Yongsan·Cheongnyangni (Korail); SRT from Suseo (SR). The Donghae Line Bujeon–Gangneung opened on 2025-01-01, connecting Busan ↔ Gangneung directly by rail.

  • Seoul → Busan ~2h30 ₩59,800 · Seoul → Gangneung ~1h50 ₩27,600
  • Booking for foreigners: Korail English site·KORAIL Talk·station machines·counters / SRT English (etk.srail.kr)
  • Korail Pass(foreigners only) unlimited standard class — excludes SRT and metropolitan-area metro
  • ⚠️ KTX tickets can't be booked at subway stations

03Bus & Payment

Buses in four languages; the problem is payment

Express buses use KOBUS (Korean·English·Chinese·Japanese); intercity buses use TxBus (reliable English for foreigners). The all-in-one app TmoneyGO bundles express, intercity, and airport buses.

Foreign card payment workaround
  • Foreign credit cards often fail online payment due to 3D-Secure and Korean mobile / alien registration number verification.
  • Workaround: multilingual ticket machines and staffed counters at stations/terminals, or Klook·Hanpass·TmoneyGO·WOWPASS (prepaid rechargeable card).
Verify · no assumptions
  • AREX·KTX fares may change — reconfirm on the official sites (airportrailroad.com·korail.com).
  • The old ‘AREX Express ₩9,500’ is an outdated fare — currently ₩13,000.
